With themes that span from satirical images and anecdotes about urban culture and the modern way of life in great cities, in april 2011 the Plastik Durdens present their first, totally independent, self titled EP, produced and recorded in a home studio, taking by storm the underground music scene of São Paulo.
Not by chance, it is easy to spot in the lyrics a certain resemblance to the tales of iconic cult movie pictures, such as the fury of Travis Bickle in Taxi Driver, Renton’s madness in Trainspotting or even the escape from all regular patterns by Alexander De Large in the dense and terrifying Stanley Kubrick classic, A Clockwork Orange. But it was in Tyler Durden, from the cynic and libertine Fight Club, that these four blokes from São Paulo found all the explanations to the band’s name.
The group, formed in 2010, create a unique atmosphere of ideals, values and feelings as much by the lyrics as for their well arranged melodies. Let it be by the vocal attacks of André Gomes, Paulo Sbrighy’s dense guitars, Michell Campos’ precise drums, or the heavy, on the spot notes of Erich Lago’s bass, the Plastik Durdens sound can be described as the perfect representation of contemporary musical art.
Having british rock as it’s major influence, the Plastik Durdens have the constant work of backing vocals in their music, showing hints of the sound of the sixties from The Kinks, The Who, The Beatles and The Small Faces. The inspirations from Joy Division, The Cure, New Order and The Stone Roses in the eighties, and the influence of the sound effects and melodies used in the nineties that could remind the listener of Blur, Suede, Radiohead, The Verve and Primal Scream.
A common characteristic among all of these bands, is that they always associated their music and image to art. And in this subject, the ones who have witnessed the first gigs promoting the launch of the homonymous, independently produced Plastik Durdens EP, noticed that as much as in the stages of Barra Funda (Livraria da Esquina) as in the alternative scene of Rua Augusta (Outs Club), the Durdens are energetic, effusive and vibrant, just like the works of Basquiat and Andy Warhol, and leave us in an eternal gazing sense of appreciation, worthy of an Escher masterpiece with its complex, enigmatic illusions and differentiated interpretations of concrete reality.
